Bordeaux’s favourite rebel

Alpine Wineries works with one of France’s most famous winemakers in order to bring out the best in this promising Indian terroir.

Stéphane Derenoncourt started his career in Bordeaux in 1982, looking for a job as a picker during the harvests. Inspired by Burgundy, he embraced a gentle, flexible approach to handling the grapes and producing the finest wines.

In 1999, he and his wife started their own successful consultancy company, Vignerons Consultants. Today he advises prestigious estates in Bordeaux such as Clos Fourtet, Canon-La-Gaffelière, Clos de l’Oratoire and Pavie-Macquin. He has another two dozen clients in France, USA, Spain, Italy, Austria, Lebanon, and Turkey.

The move to India followed Derenoncourt’s partnership with Francis Ford Coppola, none other than the famous director of “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now”, who hired him as a wine maker for his eponymous project in nearby Lake County in California.
